FAQ

About linen

Why does linen feel rough at first?

Natural linen that has not been treated can feel textured on the first night. Avenelle Home garment-washes The Nave before shipping, which means it is soft from the first night. It continues to soften with every subsequent wash — the material improves with use rather than degrading from it.

Does linen always crease?

Yes. Creasing is inherent to the flax fibre structure and cannot be engineered out without compromising the properties that make linen worth buying. Most Avenelle Home customers stop ironing within a month. The lived-in look is not a flaw — it is what natural linen looks like when it is real.

How does linen compare to cotton for sleeping?

Linen regulates temperature better than cotton — it keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. It absorbs moisture without feeling damp, making it a strong choice for warm sleepers and warm climates. Cotton percale is also good and easier to maintain. The right answer depends on what you value more: immediate simplicity or a material with more character over time. Read our full linen vs cotton comparison for a detailed breakdown.

How long does linen bedding last?

Well-made linen outlasts cotton in normal use — often significantly. Exact longevity depends on how it is washed, stored, and used. What we can say honestly: linen is a material that improves rather than degrades, which is rare. We do not make promises about specific timeframes, but we build The Nave to be kept, not replaced.

About Avenelle Home

Where is Avenelle Home linen made?

All Avenelle Home products are manufactured in Portugal, from certified European flax. Portugal has one of the strongest linen weaving traditions in Europe — the mills we work with have been producing fine textiles for generations.

What is Drop 1?

Drop 1 is Avenelle Home's first product release — The Nave, a jacquard linen duvet cover set available in Queen and King. The design draws on the proportions of Renaissance architecture: structured, considered, and made to be lived with for a long time.

Why are you not cheaper?

The price reflects the material and the manufacturing — certified European flax, garment-washed, produced in a Portuguese mill with decades of experience, with construction tolerances that most brands cut to save margin. We do not have flagship stores, decades of marketing spend, or the overhead of a large organisation. What you pay for is the product. Read more in our breakdown of why linen costs what it costs.

How does Avenelle compare to Parachute?

Both brands use European flax and manufacture in Portugal. Both garment-wash. The differences are in design and construction philosophy. Parachute uses a neutral palette and has a decade of track record. Avenelle Home produces original jacquard designs — The Nave is woven rather than printed — and does not cut corners on construction details. We are a new brand on our first drop. Care and maintenance

How do I wash linen bedding?

Machine wash at 30–40°C with a mild liquid detergent. No bleach, no optical brighteners, no fabric softener. Line dry where possible — tumble dry on low if necessary, remove promptly. Iron on medium heat while slightly damp if desired. Most people find linen's natural texture preferable to a pressed finish. For the full guide, read how to wash linen bedding.

Will linen shrink?

Linen can shrink slightly on the first wash — typically 3 to 5%. Avenelle Home accounts for this in the product dimensions. Wash at the recommended temperature and shrinkage after the first wash is minimal.
