Avenelle Home is a premium linen bedding brand built on one principle: the best materials, honestly priced, constructed without compromise.
Why linen
Linen is not a material that impresses immediately. It creases. It looks lived-in. But wash it, sleep in it, live with it — and it softens in a way that synthetic fibres never do. Premium linen bedding becomes more comfortable over time, not less. That is rare. Linen absorbs moisture without feeling damp, regulates temperature in both heat and cold, and outlasts cotton by a decade in normal use.
The best European flax grows close to the Atlantic coast — in Normandy, Belgium, and parts of the Netherlands. The wet climate, the North Sea air, the soil: everything about that geography suits the flax plant. Certified European flax traces the fibre from field to fabric. That is what goes into every Avenelle Home product.
Why Portugal
Europe once had weavers everywhere. Most of that is gone now. What remains are a handful of mills, most of them over a hundred years old, that never lost the knowledge. Portugal is one of the benchmarks — a country where craft survived by stubbornness. The mills that produce for the world's leading bedding brands are the same mills available to independent labels. The difference is never the factory — it is what you ask them to make, and whether you are willing to pay for it.
Construction without compromise
The overlap on a pillowcase should be long enough to keep the pillow inside. Buttons should be mother of pearl or quality matt white — not flexible plastic that discolours. Fabric width should be calculated for the mattress, not reduced to save a few metres per roll. These are not selling points. They are the minimum standard for something worth making.
The founder
Avenelle Home was founded by Christ van Giersbergen, a former textile trading professional and interim CEO based between the Netherlands and Marbella. The brand is independently owned and built at its own pace, measuring success in years rather than quarters.
