How Linen Bedding Is Made: From Flax Field to Finished Sheet

Most people who buy linen bedding never see the inside of a flax field or a Portuguese mill. They feel the cloth, read the label, and pay the price. The gap between those three points is where most of the quality lives — and where most of the misleading marketing hides.
Here is what actually happens between a French flax stem and the linen sheet you sleep on.
1. The flax grows for one hundred days
Flax is a slow crop. From sowing in March to harvest in July, the cycle takes roughly one hundred days, and almost all of the world's premium bedding flax comes from a narrow band of fields running from Normandy through Belgium and into the Netherlands. The climate there — wet enough, cool enough, with the right soil — does something no other region can replicate at scale. The fibers grow long, fine, and strong.
This is the "European flax" you see on labels. The certification is real and traceable. It is not a marketing flourish.
When flax is pulled rather than cut, the full length of the stem is preserved. Longer fibers mean fewer joins along the eventual yarn, which means a smoother surface and a sheet that does not pill or shed.
2. Retting separates the fiber from the stem
After harvest, the stems are laid back on the same fields they grew in for several weeks. Dew and morning dampness break down the pectin that binds the long, useful fibers to the woody core. This is called retting, and the European farmers who do it well treat it as a craft. Too short and the fibers do not separate cleanly. Too long and the fiber loses strength.
This step is one of the reasons cheap "linen" sheets feel scratchy. Skipped or rushed retting leaves coarse fiber in the yarn.
3. Spinning turns the fiber into yarn
The retted fiber is combed, sorted by length, and spun into yarn. The two main methods are wet spinning and dry spinning. Wet spinning, which runs the fiber through warm water during the twist, produces a finer, smoother yarn — and is what every premium bedding mill uses.
Yarn count matters here. A finer yarn drapes softer and looks more refined. A heavier yarn feels more rustic. Both are valid; they belong to different products.
4. Dyeing happens at the yarn or at the cloth — and it changes everything
There are two ways to get color into linen bedding, and the difference shows up in the finished product immediately.
Piece-dyed linen is woven first in undyed yarn, then dipped in dye as finished cloth. This is faster and cheaper. It produces the flat, single-tone linen you see across most of the market.
Yarn-dyed linen is dyed before weaving. Each color is dyed in a separate bath, in measured kilos of fiber, then loaded onto the loom as a pre-colored thread. This is how stripes, windowpane, herringbone, and other woven patterns are built. The color is structural — part of the cloth itself, not a finish applied on top.
Yarn-dyeing is slower, requires more setup, and costs more in fiber waste. It is also what allows a linen sheet to carry a permanent woven design that does not fade, peel, or wash out.
5. Weaving is where the design enters the cloth
Once the yarn is dyed and warped onto the loom, the weaver decides how the threads cross. A plain weave gives you the classic linen look. A windowpane weave introduces accent threads at calculated intervals to create a visible grid. A herringbone weave creates a directional pattern in the structure itself.
The good mills in Portugal — the ones that have been doing this for decades — set up looms slowly, run them at moderate speed, and inspect each meter as it comes off. The cheaper operations run faster, accept more flaws, and rely on finishing to hide them.
6. Garment-washing is the final step that decides how the sheet feels
Right off the loom, linen is stiff. It needs to be relaxed. The fiber has to break in.
Garment-washing — sometimes called stonewashing — tumbles the finished cloth in industrial machines with water, mild enzymes, and time. The fiber softens, the weave settles, and the sheet starts to drape the way linen is supposed to drape. A good garment-wash takes hours. A poor one takes minutes and leaves the cloth flat and over-treated.
There is no shortcut here. The softness you feel in a high-end linen sheet is partly the fiber and partly the time spent washing it.
7. Cutting, sewing, and inspection
The washed cloth is cut to size for duvet covers, shams, and pillowcases. The seams are reinforced — French seams or double-stitched, depending on the maker. Buttons, ties, or zips are added. The finished pieces are pressed, inspected, folded, and packed.
A Portuguese bedding mill at this stage employs people who have been doing this work for fifteen or twenty years. The seams are tight. The hems are square. The mistakes are caught.
Why this process matters when you choose a set
When you read "European flax, woven in Portugal" on a label, what you are actually reading is a hundred-day growing cycle, weeks of retting, wet-spun yarn, careful dyeing, slow weaving, and a long final wash. Each step adds days. Each step adds cost. Each step adds quality you can feel.
