Linen Bedding King Size — Dimensions, Sizing, and What to Buy
Posted by Avenelle Home on May 13th 2026
King size linen bedding in the US requires attention to dimensions, set composition, and how the specific brand interprets "King" — which is not as standardized as buyers assume. This guide covers everything you need to know before purchasing a King linen set.
US King Mattress Dimensions
A standard US King mattress measures 76 × 80 inches (193 × 203 cm). It's 16 inches wider than a Queen. That additional width changes the drape calculation for duvet covers and fitted sheets, and it means two people sleeping in a King have significantly more individual space than in a Queen — relevant because it's one of the reasons King bedding needs to be sized more generously to cover both sides adequately.
King vs. California King
The California King is a different mattress: 72 × 84 inches — narrower and longer than a standard King. Standard King bedding technically fits a Cal King but will be slightly narrow and slightly short. Most quality bedding brands produce separate Cal King dimensions. Avenelle Home's current Drop 1 offers Queen and King; Cal King will be addressed in future releases.
Avenelle Home King Dimensions
The Nave King duvet cover finishes at 260 × 240 cm after washing — approximately 102 × 94 inches. This provides generous coverage on a standard King mattress with appropriate drape on all sides. The two King pillowcases finish at 92 × 52 cm (36 × 20 inches), fitting standard US King pillows. Euro shams are consistent across Queen and King: 76 × 76 cm finished with a 5 cm Oxford flange.
King Set Composition
The Nave King set includes one King duvet cover, two Euro shams, and two King pillowcases. This is the standard configuration for a US King bed. As with the Queen, a flat sheet is not included — most US buyers use the duvet cover as the primary top layer without a separate flat sheet.
King vs. Queen: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
If you have a King mattress, the answer is straightforwardly yes — Queen bedding is too narrow to cover a King properly and will pull off the sides during use. The question arises when buyers have a Queen mattress and are considering a King duvet for aesthetic reasons — more generous drape, a more styled look. That's a legitimate choice. A King duvet cover on a Queen mattress drapes 20 to 30 cm further on each side, which some people find looks better. The downside is a slightly larger volume of fabric to wash and store.
Linen Shrinkage on First Wash
Linen shrinks slightly — 3 to 5% — in the first wash and then stabilizes. The dimensions listed above are post-wash measurements. A new King set fresh from the box will measure slightly larger; after the first wash, it reaches the stable dimensions noted. This is standard for all quality linen and is accounted for in the cutting process during manufacturing.
